A man from North Carolina has admitted to the murder of his mother following their discussions regarding him not having a job.

The 23-year-old son, Marques McBride, confessed to the crime in a Mecklenburg County Court room last week, where he pleaded guilty to the murder of his 44-year-old mother, Santavius McBride. The incident took place in east Charlotte in July 2023, with law enforcement responding to a shooting at a residence on Foxford Place.

Upon arrival, officers discovered Santavius deceased from a gunshot wound. Shortly after contacting emergency services, Marques voluntarily surrendered to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, expressing his intention to take responsibility for the shooting. Subsequently, he was arrested and charged with murder, being denied bail.

Marques later entered a guilty plea for second-degree murder on last Thursday in connection with his mother’s death, resulting in a prison sentence of 300 to 375 months.

He will receive credit for 335 days already spent in custody.
