Police say James Thomas Daye shot his 34-year-old step-son Thomas Jeffries Jr. with a 12-gauge shotgun at their Alamance County, NC home.

What started as a day of celebration ended in a deadly family tragedy—just hours after Thomas publicly posted “Happy bday Tommy step pops” on Facebook with a pic of the two toasting shots, according to a Facebook story post.

400 Poplar Street in Graham, NC is where police say the fatal shooting occurred on Wednesday, August 20—the night before James’s own birthday.

Thomas Jeffries Jr.,was shot in the stomach and later died at the hospital.

James is charged with murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Bond was denied and he’s due back in court September 11, 2025.
