TUCSON, AZ — The investigation into the disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, mother of Today show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, took a major turn on Tuesday, when the FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Department publicly released surveillance photos and multiple video clips showing a masked, armed individual outside Nancy’s home the morning she vanished, law enforcement confirmed.

Nancy Guthrie, an 84-year-old Arizona woman, disappeared from her home under suspicious circumstances, prompting an FBI investigation and national attention as authorities search for answers.

In a rare and critical move, these visuals — captured from a Nest doorbell camera and recovered even though the device had no active subscription.

Photos were shared by FBI Director Kash Patel on X (formerly Twitter). They show a masked person wearing a ski mask and gloves, a backpack and what appears to be a holstered firearm. Images show the individual approaching and tampering with the front door camera in the early hours of Feb. 1 — the day Nancy was reported missing.

Law enforcement also published two video clips from the same security camera: In one, the masked person walks toward the door and raises a gloved hand toward the camera, seemingly trying to hide their face. In another clip, the individual picks up foliage from the yard and places it over the camera, suggesting deliberate attempts to conceal the device’s view.

Detained for Questioning — What Law Enforcement Says

Hours after the images were released, authorities have now detained an individual for questioning in connection with the abduction investigation, according to officials briefed on the case.

The person was taken into custody south of Tucson and law enforcement is preparing to search a location tied to the individual. No arrest has been announced yet, and it’s unclear if charges will be filed. Local and federal investigators continue to treat the investigation as active.

 Family Pleas & Public Response
