An employee was shot in the chest during a workplace shooting at Mack’s Liver Mush in Rutherford County, North Carolina. The suspect was arrested inside the plant and charged with attempted first-degree murder.
RUTHERFORD COUNTY, N.C. — A violent shooting happened Tuesday at Mack’s Liver Mush, when an employee was shot inside the popular Rutherford County food processing plant.
According to the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office, emergency communications received a call on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, from Mack’s Liver Mush, located at 1294 Hopewell Road in Shelby, reporting that an employee had been shot in the chest and that the suspected shooter was still inside the facility.
Deputies from the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office, rushed to the scene. When officers arrived, they were able to safely take the suspect into custody without further violence.
Authorities identified the suspect as Donta Laney of Forest City.
The victim, whose identity has not been released, was transported from the scene to Spartanburg Medical Center for medical treatment. Officials have not yet provided an update on the victim’s condition.
Laney has been charged with Attempted First-Degree Murder and is currently being held without bond, according to jail records. Officials have not released information regarding a possible motive or what led up to the shooting.

Mack’s Liver Mush ownership has confirmed that they are fully cooperating with law enforcement as the investigation continues.
