83-Year-Old Man Stabs Apartment Manager During Heated Dispute at Miami Senior Complex
An 83-year-old man has been arrested and charged with attempted second-degree murder after allegedly stabbing his apartment manager during a confrontation over a failed inspection.
The violent altercation happened on August 4, 2025, at the Rebecca Towers senior living complex, where surveillance cameras caught every moment leading up to the brutal attack.
Video footage shows John Gula, 83, standing outside his apartment with a woman believed to be his girlfriend. He is engaged in a conversation with Amelia Sola Ortiz, the property manager. What began as a tense discussion quickly turned dangerous.
Gula is seen allegedly pulling out a folding knife and stabbing Ortiz multiple times — once in the chest and then in the back of the head. Ortiz tries to defend herself as the assault spills into the hallway.Â
Ortiz managed to escape and stumbled down the hallway into a nearby apartment, where she collapsed and begged for help. Emergency responders rushed her to Ryder Trauma Center, where she was treated for her injuries.
ARREST MADE AFTER POLICE REVIEW SURVEILLANCE FOOTAGE
Miami Beach police used CCTV footage to track Gula’s movements from the 10th floor — where the attack occurred — down to the 7th floor. There, officers found him hiding in a bathroom inside his girlfriend’s apartment.
Authorities say Gula’s shoes were soaked in blood, and he was immediately taken into custody.
So far, Gula has refused to speak with investigators, invoking his Fifth Amendment rights. He is currently being held without bond pending further court proceedings.
