President Trump fires Kristi Noem as Homeland Security Secretary after deadly immigration enforcement incidents and growing controversy inside DHS spark bipartisan criticism.
President Donald Trump has officially fired Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, marking the first major cabinet shake-up of his second term.

Trump announced Thursday that Markwayne Mullin is expected to take over leadership of the United States Department of Homeland Security, pending confirmation.

While the president publicly thanked Noem for what he called “spectacular results, especially on the border,” many say the move comes after weeks of mounting pressure, controversy, and some very uncomfortable questions inside Washington.
DEADLY INCIDENTS SPARK NATIONAL OUTRAGE
One of the biggest controversies hanging over Noem involved two U.S. citizens killed during federal immigration operations in Minneapolis.
The victims — Renee Good and Alex Pretti — were participating in demonstrations tied to immigration enforcement actions.
Noem ignited even more backlash after publicly suggesting both individuals were connected to “domestic terrorism.”
That claim immediately drew pushback from lawmakers and civil rights advocates who said there was little publicly known evidence to support the label.
Soon after, calls for her resignation started coming from Democrats — and even a few Republicans who began questioning her leadership.
WASHINGTON BUZZED ABOUT HER ADVISER
Reports surfaced about a close personal relationship between Noem and longtime Trump ally Corey Lewandowski, who had been serving as a senior adviser within the department.
According to reports, the two were frequently traveling together while managing DHS operations, which allegedly caused tension among some staff members.
When lawmakers asked Noem directly about the allegations during a heated congressional hearing, she brushed them off as “tabloid garbage.”
THE $220 MILLION QUESTION
Lawmakers also began scrutinizing a massive $220 million advertising campaign promoting border enforcement policies.
The campaign prominently featured Noem and reportedly involved a firm tied to someone who previously worked in her communications circle.
The situation quickly caught the attention of several senators, including John Kennedy, who questioned the decision-making behind the contract.
🚨 Republican Senator Kennedy just went after Kristi Noem for spending $220 million in taxpayer money on commercials featuring herself.
Her response: “It would be helpful to know how effective it has been.”
Kennedy: “They were effective in your name recognition.”

Meanwhile, Thom Tillis warned he might block Senate business if DHS failed to provide answers regarding internal investigations tied to the department.

“We’re an exceptional nation, and one of the reasons we’re exceptional is because we expect exceptional leadership, and you’ve demonstrated anything but that…And that is why I’ve called for your resignation.”pic.twitter.com/n0gNddYIqg

Even before her time running DHS, Noem had already faced national backlash after revealing in a memoir that she shot and killed a dog and a goat she owned, saying the animals were dangerous.
The story went viral during the 2024 election cycle and became one of the most talked-about moments of her political career.
Critics have continued referencing the incident whenever questions about her leadership arise.
Despite the abrupt firing, Trump said Noem will remain involved in his administration — just in a different role.
According to the president, she will soon serve as a special envoy for a new regional security initiative called “Shield of the Americas.”
Meanwhile, if confirmed, Senator Mullin will inherit one of the largest federal agencies in Washington, overseeing operations that include:
-
Immigration and Customs Enforcement
-
United States Border Patrol
-
Federal Emergency Management Agency
-
The Secret Service and other national security divisions
Welp!
