What led to a shootout between a suspect and Raleigh police remains unclear. However, in an update just before 8:00 p.m., police officials confirmed that the suspect was deceased, and one of their officers was hospitalized with a “serious gunshot wound.”
Chief Deputy Rico Boyce of the Raleigh Police Department requested prayers for the injured officer, whose identity has not yet been released.
“Our officer suffered a serious gunshot wound in an exchange of shots with the suspect,” Raleigh Deputy Chief Rico Boyce said.
Boyce said that just after 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, officers received a call to the 600 block of Democracy Street. When officers arrived, someone inside the residence began shooting at them. An officer called for assistance, and multiple officers from several jurisdictions responded.
“AS OFFICERS WERE CONTAINING THE RESIDENCE, THE SUBJECT INSIDE THE RESIDENCE CONTINUED TO SHOOT AT OFFICERS,” BOYCE SAID. “OFFICERS ON SCENE RETURNED FIRE STRIKING THE SUBJECT.”
Boyce confirmed that the suspect was deceased at the scene.
