A High Point turkey shooting breaks out after a grocery store promo dispute turns into a heated fight that spills into the parking lot.
Employees told WXII that the drama began when a customer got heated over the rules of a turkey promotion offering birds for just 29 cents a pound — but only if shoppers spent at least $35 in qualifying groceries. Workers claim the customer didn’t meet the requirements, and when they tried to explain the deal, tempers started climbing.
Before staff could even get the full explanation out, another customer stepped in from a different register, inserting themselves.
One employee described the moment the situation flipped from talking to tussling, saying the second customer “ran over to the man… next thing you know, they right there confrontation… they tussling, trying to get his gun out of his pouch.” Witnesses say the fight became physical so quickly that workers had no time to intervene before both men were wrestling and shouting across the checkout area.
A video circulating shows one of the men pulling out a gun and pointing it at the other man’s head.
Police say one of the customers eventually stormed out of the store and returned moments later with a firearm. By the time he got back, the other man had also stepped outside.
That’s when the already tense situation erupted into an exchange of gunfire in the parking lot. When officers arrived, they found one man shot in the arm. EMS transported him to the hospital with what officials described as traumatic but non-life-threatening injuries.
The Food Lion store shut down for the night but reopened Friday morning with a posted notice letting shoppers know operations were back to normal.
Detectives confirmed both men involved stayed on scene and cooperated with investigators, but High Point Police have not released their names and have not confirmed whether any arrests or charges will be filed at this time.
