Federal Agent Shooting in Portland Leaves Two Injured

Federal law enforcement presence following a federal agent shooting in Portland

PORTLAND, OREGON — A federal agent shooting in Portland has left two people wounded and intensified national outrage over federal law-enforcement operations, making this incident the second federal agent–involved shooting since the deadly Minneapolis shooting Wednesday morning.

The shooting happened Thursday afternoon in East Portland, where federal agents opened fire during what authorities described as a “targeted vehicle stop” in the parking lot of Adventist Health Portland. Portland police confirmed they were not involved in the shooting — once again placing the use of deadly force squarely in federal hands.

According to the Portland Police Bureau, officers were dispatched at approximately 2:18 p.m. to Southeast Main Street near I-205 after reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, police confirmed the shooting involved U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers, an agency under the Department of Homeland Security.

City officials were quick to clarify that the agents involved were not ICE, even as the shooting occurred on the same day as a major anti-ICE protest downtown, fueled by outrage over the killing of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good, a U.S. Citizen.

Homeland Security later claimed agents were attempting to stop a vehicle allegedly connected to Venezuelan gang activity when the driver “weaponized” the vehicle and attempted to strike agents — forcing an agent to fire what the agency called a “defensive shot.”

Minutes later, at 2:24 p.m., Portland police received a call from a man requesting medical help near Northeast 146th Avenue and East Burnside. Officers located both a man and a woman suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

TMZ reports that dispatch audio they obtained “reveals cops were told the man was shot twice in the arm and the woman, his wife, was shot in the chest.”

The shooting also disrupted a live Portland City Council meeting. Mayor Keith Wilson abruptly ended proceedings and released a scathing statement condemning federal militarization.

“Portland is not a training ground for militarized agents,” Wilson said. “We cannot sit by while constitutional protections erode and bloodshed mounts.”

Wilson called on ICE to suspend operations in Portland until a full investigation is completed.
