Wake County Schools Agree to $800,000 Settlement After Delvin Ferrell Killed at Southeast Raleigh High

Wake County schools have agreed to pay $800,000 to the family of Delvin Ferrell, the 15-year-old student who was fatally stabbed during a fight at Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School.

RALEIGH, N.C. — The Wake County Board of Education has agreed to an $800,000 settlement with the family of Delvin Ferrell, the 15-year-old student who was fatally stabbed during a fight inside Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School in 2023.

The settlement will be paid to Ferrell’s parents, Telisha Yvette Cotton and Dexter Jermain Ferrell, both individually and in their roles as co-administrators of their son’s estate. The agreement was reached before a lawsuit was filed, with the family agreeing to release potential legal claims against the school district as part of the deal.

What happened inside the school

Delvin Ferrell got into an altercation inside the school’s gym that turned deadly. According to police and court records, multiple students were involved in the fight. Ferrell was stabbed and later died from his injuries. Another student was also hurt during the incident.





Criminal case still pending

The student accused of the stabbing, Tyquan General Jr., was 14 years old at the time. He was initially charged in juvenile court, but prosecutors later moved to have him tried as an adult due to the severity of the case.
