Will McDonald is accused of shooting and killing his 10-year-old son, Kendrick McDonald on Thanksgiving
A 47-year-old man in Nebraska was arrested on Thanksgiving Day for allegedly shooting and killing his 10-year-old son in front of their family home while multiple witnesses were present.
Will McDonald was charged with criminal homicide, use of a firearm, and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person in the death of Kendrick McDonald.
According to a news release from the Omaha Police Department, officers responded to a shooting outside a residence and found Kendrick suffering from a single gunshot wound.
He later died at a hospital.
Will was quickly arrested, and the investigation is ongoing. The Omaha World-Herald reported that Will may have shot his son under the mistaken belief that the boy was stealing his car. Investigators found evidence that the car alarm had been going off just before the shooting.
Police could not confirm whether Kendrick’s mother was present during the shooting, but there were other children at the scene.
Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine stated that it does not appear that Will was justified in firing the gun. A handgun believed Kendrick McDonald to have been used in the shooting was recovered from the scene, and Will was prohibited from possessing a firearm due to a previous felony conviction for robbery.
Will is being held in the Douglas County Jail without bond.
