Sources told The North Carolina Beat Monday evening that one of the deputies was already deceased, but officials hadn’t come out and confirmed the information at the time.
Tuesday morning, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office said that 38-year-old Sgt. Matthew Fishman died at ECU Health Medical Center.
Sgt. Fishman, along with two other deputies, were attempting to serve involuntary commitment papers on 23-year-old Jourdan Hamilton on Arrington Bridge Road in Dudley Monday morning when they were shot by Hamilton.
Hamilton was found dead inside a home he barricaded himself in with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound nine hours later, according to Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputy Alexander Ramon Torres, 27, and Corporal Andrew Cox, 37, are both stable at ECU health.
