Danye Negash Medhin, a 40-year-old alumnus of North Carolina Central University (NCCU), has been charged with felony riot and the unlawful discharge of a firearm on educational property, as reported by warrants obtained by The North Carolina Beat.
On Saturday evening (Oct.27), school officials notified students and staff at approximately 7:45 p.m. about the potential presence of an active shooter on campus. Although there were no reported injuries resulting from gunfire, law enforcement indicated that they had to respond to medical emergencies during the incident.
The alert regarding the active shooter was lifted around 8:11 p.m. following Medhin‘s arrest. According to police warrants, Medhin is accused of “unlawfully, willfully, and feloniously“ discharging a GLOCK 26 firearm on the premises of McLean Residence Hall.

Second ‘Active Shooter’ alert issued for NCCU
According to NCCU campus police, after canceling the initial alert at 8:11 p.m., a second active shooter alert was issued around 8:59 p.m. for another shooting. However, it remains unclear whether the two incidents are connected or if there were any injuries in the second shooting.
Video shows fighting before shots fired outside of Mclean Residence Hall
According to several individuals who spoke to The North Carolina Beat and provided us with video footage, they were in the Greek Bowl when the shots rang out and witnessed everyone running past McLean Residence Hall.
In a video shared with us, a fight can also be seen occurring before the gunshots are fired. The videos are short.

According to Medhin’s LinkedIn profile, he holds the position of “Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice.” He completed his education at North Carolina Central University (NCCU) in 2016, having commenced his studies there in 2014.
In 2017, he began his career as an “Adjunct Instructor” at both Wake Technical Community College and Saint Augustine’s University. He departed from Wake Technical Community College in May 2019 and subsequently left Saint Augustine’s University in June of the same year, according to his profile.
Medhin’s professional trajectory continued in August 2019 when he accepted a position as a “Graduate Research Assistant” at Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia, where he remained until October 2024. During his tenure at Georgia State University, he also indicated in 2023 that he had assumed the role of “Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice” at NCCU, asserting that he is currently employed in this capacity.
As of now, officials have not provided any additional information regarding this matter.
