Josh Stein has been crowned the governor of North Carolina after winning the North Carolina 2024 governor election, defeating Lieutenant Mark Robinson in a hard-fought race.Â
Stein, a Democrat and current state Attorney General, won with a narrow but clear margin, securing 51% of the vote to Robinson’s 47%. Stein becomes the first Democrat to win the governor’s office in North Carolina since Governor Roy Cooper’s re-election in 2020.
The race between Stein and Robinson, a conservative firebrand, was one of the most contentious in recent state history. Robinson, who had gained national attention for his outspoken views on social issues, ran on a platform of economic conservatism and strong opposition to progressive policies. His combative rhetoric and controversial remarks sparked fierce debates throughout the campaign, but he drew significant support from conservative voters across the state.
Stein’s campaign focused on improving education, expanding healthcare access, and addressing climate change. He also positioned himself as a defender of voting rights and sought to distance himself from the partisan conflicts that have often marked North Carolina politics in recent years.
As Stein prepares to take office in January, he faces a divided legislature, with Republicans maintaining control of both the North Carolina House and Senate.Â
