Whitney Denise Smith tax scam
Word on the Curb…Whitney Denise Smith, of Highpoint, a deadbeat tax preparer is out here allegedly scamming claiming she’s a “businesswoman.” She allegedly finessed the father of their children out of his hard-earned $10,000 tax refund.
According to Darrius Fairley, the victim in this situation, Whitney has been playing games after he trusted her with filing his taxes for the second year in a row. Last year, Darrius says he got his refund—although not the way he asked—but this year? Whitney is MIA with his 10 stacks and can’t seem to give a straight answer about where it went.
Darrius, a dedicated father of he and Whitney’s four children, all of whom live with him full-time, says he filed three kids on his taxes this year—two of his children with Whitney and one with his current girlfriend. Expecting his refund, he tried logging into the IRS.gov website, only to keep getting error messages stating that his information didn’t match IRS records.
“EVERY TIME I WENT ON THERE WITH THE INFORMATION SHE GAVE ME, IT SAID THE INFORMATION DOES NOT MATCH,” Darrius told The North Carolina Beat.

After doing some digging, Darrius found out that his $10,000 refund was deposited on a prepaid card on February 26, 2025—something he never agreed to. So where’s the money, Whitney? Every time Darrius tried to get answers from Whitney, she allegedly flipped the script, caught an attitude, and refused to be professional.
“I HAD TO CHASE HER DOWN JUST TO GET SMALL INFORMATION, AND AFTER THAT, SHE BLOCKED ME,” Darrius said. “WHEN I GOT IN CONTACT AGAIN, SHE SAID, ‘I AIN’T HELPING YOU WITH SH*T, FIND OUT YOURSELF, CALL THE IRS.’”
Darrius took to social media to blast Whitney for allegedly stealing his tax refund but has since removed the posts.
Despite issues with last year’s tax return, he still gave her another chance, hoping to support the mother of his children.
“I GAVE HER THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT BECAUSE SHE’S MY KIDS’ MAMA, AND THEY STILL LOVE HER,” Darrius said. “I’M NOT SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO SEE PEOPLE DO BAD, BUT THIS RIGHT HERE IS JUST WRONG.”
As for Whitney, when The North Carolina Beat reached out for a statement, she laughed and denied having Darrius’ money. But when asked where the money actually was, she had no answer—which, let’s be real, is highly suspicious for someone who filed the taxes and handled all the paperwork.
