An explosion in Durham, North Carolina this morning has left one person dead and several injured including a firefighter, according to officials.
The explosion happened around 10:07 a.m. when a contractor boring under the sidewalk hit a 2-inch gas line, Durham police spokesman Will Glenn said.
Emergency crews quickly responded to the scene and started evacuating the area.
Seventeen people were transported to local hospitals, six of whom were critically wounded.
Authorities are asking people to avoid the Brightleaf Square area and warned that parts of downtown will be closed for a couple of days as they continue their search and rescue.
