EXCLUSIVE VIDEO: Man shot in chest by Sanford North Carolina police caught on tape

(Sanford, North Carolina)- One officer with the Sanford Police Department is on administrative leave pending an investigation into a shooting that happened Tuesday afternoon. 

A press release stated that on Tuesday, officers with the Sanford Police Department were called to the Dollar Tree at 2031 S. Horner Blvd. shortly after 4:30 p.m. The clerk told officers that a man armed with a knife came into the store and demanded money. 

The suspect then fled the store on foot with an undisclosed amount of money. Officers say they located the man in a wooded area next to the Dollar Tree. He was armed with a knife. While attempting to arrest the alleged armed suspect, an officer fired his weapon, striking the suspect at what appears to be his chest, according to video footage. 

The suspect was transported to Central Carolina Hospital.

The SBI has been called in to investigate the shooting.

Two women who were in the area on Tuesday captured the shooting on video.
