Lakita Rochelle Wilson, a former afterschool group leader for Durham Public Schools, has been charged with multiple counts of child abuse after an incident involving an 8-year-old disabled student. Wilson, who resigned on October 31, 2024, was employed by Community Education and Pearsontown Elementary School at the time of the alleged abuse.
According to court documents, the incident occurred on October 1, 2024, when Wilson is accused of pushing the disabled child against a wall, pinning him to the floor, and applying pressure to his neck. The assault reportedly caused serious injuries, including bruising and lacerations to the child’s chest, shoulders, neck, back, and arms.
An arrest warrant for Wilson was issued on December 3, 2024. However, authorities were unable to apprehend her until Friday, February 7, 2025. The charges against Wilson include felony child abuse inflicting serious physical injury, aggravated assault on an individual with a disability, misdemeanor child abuse, and assault on a child under 12.
Following her arrest, Wilson was granted a $10,000 secured bond and released later that afternoon. Her next court appearance is scheduled for March 5, 2025.
