A 13-year-old girl from Raleigh, North Carolina, who would have turned 14 in July, was found shot dead inside an apartment referred to as a “Party House” early Monday morning, according to the Raleigh Police Department.
According to the Raleigh Police Department, around 2:30 a.m. early Monday morning, officers responded to The Trails of North Hills Apartments in the 1900 block of North Hills Drive off Lead Mine Road and found 13-year-old My’Kia dead with gunshot wounds.
A spokesperson for the family told local reporters that My’Kia was in the eighth grade. The spokesperson said My’Kia lived in Southeast Raleigh and did not reside at the apartment where she was found shot dead.
Raleigh police had one building of the apartment complex taped off with crime scene tape as officers canvassed the area, searching for anyone with information.
Local news reports say loved ones of the deceased 13-year-old spent hours sitting at the complex, emotional as they awaited information from police.
There are no suspects in custody, and it is unclear how My’Kia was killed. However, according to Broadcastify radio traffic, a caller informed dispatchers that someone was playing with a gun and was shot.
No details from the police have been released yet regarding the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
