Murder suspect say he will hire his own attorney, will fight murder charge against 5-year-old

Darius Sessoms, 25, of Wilson who is accused of killing 5-year-old Cannon Hinnant Sunday made his first court appearance in Wilson County District Court today.

Sessoms did not physically appear in court but Judge John Britt arraigned him through WebEx, a virtual conference used by N.C. Courts.

When Sessoms was asked if he would be hiring an attorney, he told Judge Britt that he will try. Judge Britt asked Sessoms if he understood that hiring a lawyer for a first-degree murder charge would be extreme. Again, Sessoms said he would be hiring his own lawyer and that he did not want a court-appointed attorney.

Sessoms was found and arrested in Goldsboro, N.C. Monday evening.
